Driving abroad: how to prepare for a car trip around Europe?
Summer is the time when many families set off on road trips around Europe. It gives them the opportunity to see more, stop in lesser-known towns, enjoy the scenery, and enjoy the journey itself, not just the final destination. However, to make the trip not only enjoyable but also safe, it is necessary to prepare properly: prepare the car, take care of documents, and insurance.
Preparing the car for the trip
A longer trip requires more attention to the car than a normal daily drive. Before leaving, it is worth visiting a service station and checking the brakes, tires, lights, oils, and cooling system. A well-maintained car will ensure not only safety, but also help avoid unforeseen problems on the road.
Make sure your car has a well-inflated spare wheel or repair kit, a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher, a warning triangle and a reflective vest. In some countries, these items are mandatory, so if you don’t have them, you may have to pay a fine. Also, don’t forget to update your navigation system and have a paper map – technology can fail at the most inopportune moment. You should also check local regulations: in some countries, the use of mobile phones or navigation on them is prohibited, in others, the use of video recorders is not allowed.
Documents required for travel
When traveling around Europe, a Lithuanian driver’s license is sufficient – it is recognized in all European Union countries. However, it is necessary to remember that each country has its own driving nuances. Not only speed limits or road sign specifications differ, but also the behavior culture of drivers and the road tax system. Therefore, before leaving, it is worth checking the rules in a specific country so that you do not encounter unpleasant surprises during your trip.
In addition to a driver’s license, a vehicle registration certificate is also required. It is also important to check whether your compulsory insurance is valid in all countries of travel. It is automatically valid in the European Economic Area, but when traveling outside it, a green card may be required. Since this year, in most EU countries, insurance documents are also valid in electronic version (on your phone or computer), but it is still a good idea to print them out and keep them in the car.
The importance of insurance
Traveling by car is always associated with risk, so insurance is one of the most important stages of preparation. Compulsory insurance ensures that damage to other road users will be compensated, but it does not protect your own car. Therefore, it is worth purchasing comprehensive insurance before traveling abroad. It will cover losses in the event of theft of your car, natural disasters or an accident, even if you caused the incident yourself. Most often, comprehensive insurance also includes roadside assistance, which is also valid abroad – this can become an indispensable help in case of trouble.
Travel insurance is no less important. Each family member should be protected from unexpected expenses due to health problems, accidents or loss of luggage. Insurance covers medical expenses and can organize transportation to Lithuania. Such protection ensures peace of mind and allows you to travel without constant worry.
Route planning
A pre-planned route makes your trip easier. Mark where there will be gas stations, rest areas, campsites or places to stay. Check what tolls apply in different countries – in some places you need to purchase vignettes, in others you pay for individual sections of the road or bridges. It is worth including the most important numbers in your phone: your insurance company, roadside assistance lines and the general emergency number 112, which operates throughout the European Union.
Prepare in advance for a smooth journey
Traveling by car around Europe is a great way to experience new experiences and create unforgettable moments with your family. However, for a smooth trip, you need to prepare in advance: check the car, arrange the documents, find out about local regulations and take care of insurance. Only then will you be able to relax and enjoy the trip and ensure that unexpected challenges do not ruin your vacation.
