Holidays in Türkiye with the family: so that the most beautiful memories are not spoiled by surprises

Turkey has been reigning as a favorite summer destination for Lithuanians for years. The warm waters of the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, golden beaches, mountainous panoramas, colorful markets, delicious food, and hospitable people all attract families looking for both relaxation and excitement. Whether you plan to passively enjoy an all-inclusive hotel near Antalya, travel through the rocky valleys of Cappadocia, or discover the grandeur of Istanbul’s Old Town, every family member will find their own vacation moment in Turkey.

However, even a dream vacation can be ruined by one unexpected event – illness, injury or lost luggage. Therefore, travel insurance is more than a formality – it is a real help that can protect your family’s peace of mind and finances.

Why is credit card insurance not enough for one family member?

It’s great if at least one family member has travel insurance linked to a credit card, but you should familiarize yourself with the applicable terms and conditions before you travel. Most often, coverage applies to family members – children (including adopted children and wards) under 21 years of age and your spouse (or cohabitant), while your parents may remain uninsured.

It is also important to know that third-party liability or baggage insurance may not be included. Therefore, when planning a family trip, it is important to choose travel insurance that clearly states that it covers all traveling family members: children, parents, and sometimes grandparents, and provides the necessary protection against all major risks.

The European Health Card is not valid in Turkey

Travelers often rely on the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), but Turkey is not an EU or EEA country. Therefore, the EHIC is not valid in Turkey, and all medical expenses are borne by the traveler. Even the simplest visits to private clinics can cost several hundred euros, and more complex cases – tens of thousands.

Insurance companies note that the cost of medical services in Turkey has increased several times in recent years. Therefore, even a minor injury or a child’s fever can become not only an emotional but also a financial test for a family.

What to do if you get sick in Turkey?

If you need medical assistance in Turkey, it is very important to contact the representatives specified in your travel insurance policy without delay. Insurance companies usually cooperate with specific medical institutions, so they can organize all the assistance – from calling a doctor to translation services or covering payments. If you do not coordinate your visit with your insurers, you risk not only incurring uncompensated expenses, but also your health if you end up in the wrong place.

The insurance must be valid until the last day of the trip.

Another common mistake is to buy insurance at the last minute or for only part of your trip. It is important to know that most travel insurance policies are only effective the day after purchase. Therefore, leaving this decision until the last night before departure is risky.

The policy must also be valid on the last day of your trip, i.e. until you land on Lithuanian soil again. However, it is recommended to add at least one additional day, as there are situations when flights are delayed or canceled, and the trip itself takes longer than planned. In such cases, you risk being left without valid insurance coverage.

A peaceful family vacation requires more than just sunshine

When family thoughts are all about the hotel pool, refreshing watermelon, sea splashes, and children’s joy, it’s easy to forget about the risks. But just a few minutes spent on proper travel insurance for the whole family can help avoid long-term worries later.

Insurance is not a document. It is part of a vacation plan that allows you to enjoy the colors, smells, and experiences of Turkey, knowing that surprises will not ruin what you have built all year.

Take care of it while you are still in Lithuania – calmly, clearly and responsibly. Then there is only one thing left: to relax, experience and enjoy – the whole family together.
