First snow on the roads: how to prepare and drive safely at the beginning of winter

The first snow has already covered the fields and roads of Lithuania. Although this is a beautiful and welcome sign of winter, it becomes a serious test for drivers every year. When temperatures hover around zero and it snows, the road surface becomes viscous, ice forms quickly, and visibility is impaired by fogged or frozen windows. Some drivers have not yet had time to adapt to the changed conditions, which increases the risk of getting into a traffic accident.

In this article, we review the most important aspects of the beginning of winter: from preparing your car to driving behavior, from removing ice to must-have items in the car interior.

Why is the first snow so dangerous?

Sudden weather changes provoke situations that drivers often underestimate:

  • Slippery roads and slush. Even a thin layer of snow can turn a road into a skating rink. The most dangerous places are bridges, overpasses, intersections and sections of road in the shadows.
  • Longer braking distance. On wet or icy roads, braking distance can be several times longer.
  • Reduced visibility. Snow, fog, sleet and mud from other cars, fogged or frozen windows significantly complicate the situation on the road.
  • Human factor. Drivers often drive too fast, brake too late, and keep too little distance in the first few days.

A snow-covered car is more than just a cosmetic problem

The most important reasons to clean your car:

  • During braking, snow from the roof can slide onto the windshield, momentarily obscuring vision.
  • Snow-covered windows can interfere with the operation of the wipers.
  • The driver must be able to see 360° around the car, which is why it is essential to clean the side and rear windows.
  • Uncleared snow from the trunk can fall onto cars following you.
  • Headlights lose their light intensity if they are covered in snow or dirty.

How to defrost windows effectively and safely?

Some cars have remote heating or starting features – if you have one, use it. If not, follow this sequence:

  1. Start the engine and direct the air flow towards the windshield.
  2. Turn on the air conditioner – it removes moisture and speeds up defrosting.
  3. Ventilate the interior by opening the doors or windows for a few seconds – this will help the moisture to evaporate faster.
  4. If the glass is frozen, use ice melter or a plastic scraper.
